Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the surgeon to look inside a joint using a tiny camera — diagnosing and treating problems without large incisions.

Overview

Arthroscopy (also called keyhole surgery) uses a pencil-thin instrument called an arthroscope — equipped with a camera and light — inserted through a small incision. It transmits a magnified view of the joint interior to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to diagnose and treat conditions ranging from torn meniscus to ligament injuries.

Compared to open surgery, arthroscopy causes less tissue trauma, reduces infection risk, and dramatically shortens recovery. Knee and shoulder arthroscopy are the most common, but the technique is also used for the ankle, wrist, elbow, and hip.

Diagnosis

  • MRI — identifies soft tissue injuries before arthroscopy
  • X-rays — assess bone alignment and arthritis
  • Diagnostic arthroscopy — the camera itself provides definitive diagnosis

Treatment Options

Knee arthroscopy

Treatment for torn meniscus, ACL reconstruction, cartilage smoothing, loose body removal.

Shoulder arthroscopy

Rotator cuff repair, labral tear repair, frozen shoulder release, dislocation stabilisation.

Ankle arthroscopy

Cartilage injury treatment, bone spur removal, ligament repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big are the incisions for arthroscopy?

Typically 2-4 small incisions, each about 5mm — roughly the size of a keyhole. The scars are minimal.

Is arthroscopy a day-care procedure?

Most diagnostic and simple therapeutic arthroscopies are day-care — you go home the same day. Complex reconstructions may require an overnight stay.
