Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) can cause embarrassment and self-consciousness. Our surgical approach removes the excess glandular tissue and fat with minimal scarring.
Overview
Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of male breast tissue caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen. It affects up to 60% of adolescent boys and 30% of adult men. While some cases resolve spontaneously, persistent gynecomastia (lasting over 2 years) usually requires surgery.
The procedure involves a combination of liposuction (to remove fatty tissue) and gland excision through a tiny incision around the areola. The result is a flatter, firmer, more masculine chest contour. Recovery is quick — most patients return to work within 3-5 days.
Causes
- Hormonal imbalance — decreased testosterone or increased oestrogen
- Puberty (usually temporary)
- Ageing — declining testosterone in older men
- Certain medications — anabolic steroids, anti-androgens, antidepressants, heart medications
- Obesity (pseudogynecomastia)
- Liver disease, kidney failure, thyroid disorders
- Marijuana, alcohol abuse
Symptoms
- Enlarged, sometimes tender breast tissue in one or both breasts
- A firm, rubbery disc of tissue felt beneath the nipple
- Self-consciousness about appearance — avoiding removing shirts in public
Diagnosis
- Physical examination — differentiating true gynecomastia (glandular tissue) from pseudogynecomastia (fat only)
- Hormonal blood tests — testosterone, oestrogen, LH, prolactin, thyroid function
- Ultrasound or mammogram — if a lump feels suspicious
Treatment Options
Liposuction + gland excision
Combined approach — liposuction removes fat, a small incision removes glandular tissue. Minimal scarring.
Liposuction only
For pseudogynecomastia where only fatty tissue is present.
Medical management
Addressing the underlying cause — changing medications, treating hormonal disorders. Effective only in the early, active phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is gynecomastia surgery permanent?
Yes — the removed glandular tissue does not grow back. However, significant weight gain or steroid use can cause re-enlargement from new fat deposition.
Will there be visible scars?
The incision is made along the edge of the areola where it's barely visible once healed. Liposuction incisions are 3-4mm and fade significantly.
